A Paper Bag and a plastic bag
The idea of a paper bag sprung to mind when making a zine. It is something that the zine can be presented in and make it look 'tidy'. I decided to use white paper bags but I didn't want them to be plain as would say nothing about the zine when receiving it. I thought about stamping when potatoes came to mind. I started to experiment with a castle shaped potato stamp and stamped one on the paper bag and it looked perfect. It represented everything about castle market that I wanted to put across as the paper bag was edgy and the stamp was rough but details, everything that the Castle Market says about itself.
I also wanted the zine to be something that the receiver could keep so I placed the zine into a A5 plastice wallet. The zine fits inside it well and because it has this protecting it, it will last a lot longer and is something that you can keep forver, unlike the market as it will be knocked down. My aim is for my zine to tell a story about the market but also be a piece of memorabilia.

Postcard
As all the images in my zine are in black and white I decided to add this colour postcard into the pack with my zine. I felt like it was unnecessary to have it inside the zine itself as it had flow without it. It will sit at the back of the zine with a signature on the back. Another thing that will make each zine unique.
I chose these images as I felt that they best represented Castle Market. Two with the signs of castle market one with the people and one with the union jack representing England and what we are as a country and what we has for example the Castle of Sheffield. I chose these colours as most are primary and they are the basic colours that come to mind when thinking of a variety of colours that is needed.
letter pressing 2
Here is the letter pressing on the back. I wanted each one to have its own number with a basic bold font in caps. I wanted the same for the front too. The words 'Castle Market' appear on the right hand side at the bottom of the cover. This is a simple title and the audience will know exactly what the zine is about after seeing the cover.
Letter Pressing
I wanted the cover to have a traditional aspect to it as I wanted it to reflect the fact that castle market is a part of history and also that the castle was built on that same patch of land. This highlights the old fashioned part of castle market.
I didn't want just normal printed type on the cover I wanted the type to be set into the card. This give the feel to the zine that it will last long and this is the feel that I am going for. As castle market wont be around for much longer the zine is something that people can keep for a long time after its gone.
Zine cover
At the beginning of the brief I decided that I wanted the covers of my zine to be all different colours as this would make each copy unique in its own way and each person would receive their own individual copy.
I chose these 5 shades of green as I feel that these colours best represent what I want. After the castle market has been kncked down there will be nothing but earth. This is also the case for the castle before the castle market was built on top of the ruins. I also like the range from dark to light with these greens. Each of these will go on its own copy of the zine with the inside copy of the illustration cover inside.
Tutorial- Change of plan
After showing my developed zine I got some feedback. We talked about the mixture of the illustrations and the photo's. After thinking about the first draft I decided to take out all of the illustrations completely as I feel that the zine flows better without them. This way the photo's can flow well on their own. I didn't want the zine to be completely made out of photo's so I decided to make the inside cover up of all of my illustrations scanned in and scaled down so that the zine has an illustrative aspect as well as photographic.
Version 1 of Zine
This is the first draft of my Zine. I have used a mixture of both Photographs and illustrations, colour and black and white. I tried to arrange it so that it was consistent and had flow. I added the colour in the middle of the zine as I thought this would be a good centre page for a break from the black and white.
Here are illustrations on each side of the pages. I thought that these images would make good use of the white space and would give a good break from all the black and white.
I also put photographs and illustrations opposing each other as I wanted a mixture of them both.
This is a double page spread with just one illustration in the middle of the two pages. This means that the folding of the book with split the image and I think this will have a nice effect.
Here is one of the double pages spreads with 4 block colour images on each page. I put this here as I think that the colour int he middle of the book will split up and give reader a break from the black and white images and photographs.
Which style to go for?
When thinking about the form of my zine I began to think of all the different possibilities that could be. Before making a final decision I decided to make a prototype of each one of my ideas so that I could get a feel of what each one would feel like in the palm of my hand and when turning the pages. Below are the examples that I made.
The fold-out
This version is a fold out zine. When handling this I didn't feel comfortable and I didn't feel that my work would look right on this format. This is because it would have to fold out into a poster and I don't feel that my work would look right on one large space compared to if it was spread onto a series of pages. Because of this I don't feel that this is an appropriate format for my zine.
A5 booklet
This is a basic folded booklet with a series of pages in between the two covers. This is a better format for the type of zine that I would like to produce but I'm not sure whether I want the booklet to be landscape as I feel that my work would layout better on this format.
A6 booklet
Like the A5 booklet the layout of this is good for my style of zine although I feel that A6 is too small for the work that I would like to put on it. In this case a bigger booklet would be more appropriate.
Concertina
I like this fold as there is a sequence to the work and it will be seen in a particular order. This concertina could also fold out into a poster and contain a wide range of images of my choice in a chosen order. Although this fold is creative and could contain a lot of illustrations or photographs I feel that I would prefer a book with turning pages as it would flow better with what I would like to illustrate.
A5 Booklet
This A5 landscape booklet the perfect format for how I would like to present my zine. As it is landscape it the pages can hold photographs well and present them in an orderly fashion, it will also do this for any illustrations I would like to include. I like the way it holds and how the user would handle it. It is a traditional and basic design and I think that this reflects the castle market.
After looking at each design I have decided to use the A5 landscape booklet as I think that this format would present my work best.

Photography
I rented out a camera from Creative Media and took it to Castle Market. People weren't to sure at first as I was holding a very large camera and taking photo's of people without their consent. Capturing the moments that I wanted to for my zine was very hard as people didn't want their photo taken. I began to think about how I could take photos without people getting angry. I decided to hold the camera round my neck and take the photos without even looking into the lens, to my surprise I captured some moments that really illustrate what I wanted people to know about Castle Market. I wanted photographs with people in them and with these people doing what they do on a day to day basis so that people looking at the zine that haven't been to the market will be able to see what happens and why people go there. I managed to capture some moment of people with their friends and partners and these are just some of the photos that will appear in my zine.
Task 2
Task 2
Here is a few examples of some zines that I found and that inspired me.
I like the idea of having an edition of 5 in different colours but having the same information inside the book. I think that This will be a good idea for my zine as it will bring a uniqueness to each zine.
Here are a few more ideas of zines. I particularly like the idea of having a paper bag with illustrations on it. This bag would then be stapled shut and the user that gets that particular unique cope can open it the way they want and keep or not keep the bag.
I was particularly inspired by one of Kid Acne's zines. He combined photographs and illustrations in an order that flows really well and has a good grid structure and layout pattern. This is the kind of zine I would like to produce as I feel that a range of illustrations and photo's will give a really good view of castle market to a potential reader. This way if they don't understand the illustrations they can look at the photos and really see the on goings in Castle Market during one day.
